Projects. Tools. These are things most guys like. My husband is no exception. This weekend was a Do-It-Yourself one for us, full of dust and messy hands, miserable mistakes, and celebrations of successful problem solving. Heck, for all I know, we should've been on TV for your amusement.
Sure, when I left home two hours earlier, my home was warm and inviting, peaceful, welcoming, not to mention clean. The floor was carpeted, and the family room was fully set up: sofa, loveseat, coffee table, two end tables with matching lamps, 42" HD TV, and a section with the surround sound, movies, and PlayStation equipment. Yup, pretty much everything my crew at home needs for what they call 'a fun weekend'.
My husband is a firm believer in home improvement, and in doing things yourself. What does he do for a living? He's a draftsman, works with architects, which means he is constantly working on new projects. So, when not working on one of those projects, he creates his own.
I don't mind the improvements; I think we are blessed that we can actually engage in improving the home, making practical changes that will benefit both aesthetically and functionally. What I don't like is the mess.
The following 2 pics show what the family room looked like upon my return from the gym. So much for warm and inviting, eh?

Ooops! After my husband worked the floorplan, something went wrong with the measure of the tile he bought. So, I began working on a pattern change to remedy the situation. It will involve cutting some tile, so he's borrowing a wet saw from his friend. Below the pattern fix is what the "runner" will look like.

This morning, it was very uncomfortable to be in the kitchen. I want to spend the least amount of time in there until this project is finished. This shot is from the kitchen towards the family room, with the tile we lay down yesterday. That big piece in the middle is my husband's previous project, an island for the kitchen that sits four, with some side shelving.

Now I'm off to take a walk, take in some fresh air, and relax my sore muscles.

whoa! way to go! we are DIY wanna be's... and me and hubby are both computer nerds so power tools and construction intimidate us. we're currently trying to create a walk-in closet... involves building a little bit of a wall and installing a door. i called an end to the project when he threatened to take a circular saw to my hardwood floors! we've talked it through and think we know what to do... hopefully it'll get finished next weekend. make sure to show us pictures when its done!
it's wonderful to start these projects, but it does seem to get insane right when you're in the middle of it all...
i had to get more tile tonight - 'nother miscalculation ;o)
