What's this?

I told Jen earlier I'd post these pics I took a back on August 17. I was on the road when I saw this, and immediately pulled over to take a quick shot.

I've never seen anything like this before? Do any of you know what it is?

Hey Zee... believe it or not I might have a photo kind of like yours, look in my photoblog diary and you will see the same rainbow effect around a clouds edge. I have no clue what it is. Send it in for Tom Terry maybe he can tell us what causes this. Very cool picture, even better than the one I got. We saw ours for a good 25-30 minutes before it got lost in the clouds, I too pulled over on US1 to take a picture. Mother Nature at her best??!!!

Should imagine its just a "different" type of rainbow. Basically I reckon the one cloud had a high concentration of water vapour and the sun was at a certain angle causing the light to be split up by the water vapour into the seven colours, Whereas a "normal" rainbow is formed when the whole sky is full of water vapour (ie after a rainstorm on a hot day).

Steve said you found the WMDs. ;) It's really pretty, whatever it is.
