Man on the moon

Well, my son has been too excited to blog. So I'll break the ice tonight, because I'm excited, too.

Bryan was gifted a telescope by his grandfather last Wednesday. Since then, my poor boy had been eager to see the moon, and do some space exploring. My dad was jazzed; you know you've given a child THE PERFECT GIFT when you see the smile and the excitement in the young one’s face, such as is seen in him. However, it wasn't till last night that my son was able to see the moon, closer, with his brand new telescope. Blame it on Florida's weather... it had been cloudy and raining all these nights.

Tonight was a different story altogether. We stepped outside at 5:30, set up, and were able to really get up close with the moon.

WOW. There are no words.

They joy and awe in my son's eyes brought mine to tears. Sure, I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up (and only achieved astro-nut status), but better than that is seeing the look of pure passion, inspiration, and possibilities in the eyes of my children. They take me to the moon and back, every single day. :o)

I just wish I could take picture of what we are seeing… that we could share with you.

Among my bookmarks, this one has new significance at home. Michael Myers has been taking pics of the moon and planets for some time. Go take a peek.

I can agree so well with so many things you said...
Wanting to be an astronaut - being an astro nut;
Seeing the joy and awe taking you to the moon and back - so poetic, so right.

I remember the first time I pointed the telescope at Jupiter. I was looking at it, and was surprised to see some small stars somewhat close to Jupiter, but not that close. And It was even odder that all 3 lined up with Jupiter. Wait for it. It took me about 15 seconds...those were some of Jupiter's moons!! And they were so far away from Jupiter! Amazing. And the details on the moon - you want to reach out and touch it!

That's wonderful!

That is on my list; to buy myself a telescope...Right now, I have a pair of binoculars that I use to gaze at the night sky. I know. Quite inefficient (grimace)...

THere's nothing that beats the wonder in a child's eyes as they learn.

Hey, Michele sent me!

I can't wait to see my future son's face light up when I give him "THE PERFECT GIFT"; it truly sounds magical.

But that's a long time in the future...

I got a telescope for Christmas when I was nine years old. It was my prized possession. I still have it. It is still one of my prized possessions. Watching my own kids looking through that telescope is one of the coolest things I ever experienced. Also, tell your son that he can see far more than just the moon through that 'scope. On a clear night, he can see some of Jupiter's moons, and scores of other awesome stuff. YOu got your child a telescope! You rock!

Ohhhhh..moon gazing. :) What an awesome, awesome prezzie. Maybe y'all can save up for one of those telescopes that have cameras built in?

Ohmygosh...several years ago, I went on a midnight stargazing trip out to the "country." A guy I worked with had one of those big boy telescopes. I looked at the moon and had to take a step back. It actually made me stop breathing for a second.
So I understand the excitement!! Geez, now I wish I had one....
